About Montanya

Our Paradigm-Shifting Heritage

Founded in 2008, in Silverton, CO, by rum maven Karen Hoskin, Montanya Distillers began with a bold vision: to create an exceptional, premium American rum that honors the traditions of high-altitude rum distilling traditions rooted in mountainous regions of Central and South America and the volcanic islands of the Caribbean.

With an unwavering commitment to the art and science of rum distillation, blending innovation, craftsmanship, and sustainability, filtered through the lens of the beautiful mountain town we call home, Montanya redefined the category. Thus earning its paradigm-shifting reputation by challenging long-held conventions of who can make award-winning rum and where it can be made.

Where there was no obvious path forward, one was made, guided values and principles that became the foundation upon which Montanya would operate.

Charting A New Path

In December 2023, Montanya embarked on an exciting new chapter with a change in leadership. A team deeply connected to the distillery's history including former head distillers Megan Campbell and Renée Newton along with marketing veteran Sean W. Richards now guides Montanya's future. With a shared vision to honor its pioneering roots while continuing the quest to elevate American rum, by crafting exceptional spirits that reflect its trailblazing heritage and bold aspirations from 9000 feet elevation in Crested Butte, CO.

Our Team

Megan Campbell

Partner - COO & Head Distiller

A South Louisiana native, Megan Campbell is our Chief Operations Officer, Master Distiller, and fearless leader where she oversees daily operations and heads up production of our award-winning rums. After earning a degree in Chemical Engineering from LSU, Megan honed her craft at Oxbow Rum before joining Montanya in 2021. She has also earned a WSET Level 3 certification in spirits. Under her leadership, the distillery has expanded its product lines while reinforcing our B Corp status by enhancing our sustainable practices and social responsibility. Driven by a passion to create, combined with an entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to education, Megan is charting a dynamic direction for Montanya’s future.

Renée Newton

Partner - Tasting Room/Retail & Cocktail Programs

As our Chief Experience Officer, Renée Newton blends southern roots and mountain soul with a deep commitment to craftsmanship and community. With degrees in Biology and Chemistry, Renée joined Montanya in 2014 after a research stint at Rocky Mountain Bio Labs that brought her to Crested Butte. She has been an integral part of Montanya's growth for a decade, excelling in roles including Master Distiller, Head of Operations, and Nationwide Events Coordinator. Renée now leads our Tasting Room, cocktail programming, human resources, and works daily to create welcoming, inclusive experiences that reflect Montanya's dedication to our values, including sustainability, innovation, and the vibrant town we call home.

Sean W. Richards

Partner - CMO

Joining the team in 2023, Sean W. Richards is the proverbial newcomer at Montanya where he leads marketing initiatives with a specific focus on strategic entry into the Texas market. Hailing from Houston, Texas, he brings two decades of entrepreneurial experience in the marketing and advertising industry, which he entered after earning a degree in Radio, Television, and Film (RTVF) and an MBA from Texas Christian University. With a passion for cultural insights, brand strategy, and storytelling he is committed to elevating Montanya's brand and expanding its market presence through collaboration, creativity, and authentic activations that reflect our values across all mediums.
